Top Model British Invasion: Episode 5 - Beverly Johnson

Top Model

by Faith-Ashleigh Wong

This week the top ten get thrown into the real world of modelling when they meet with real designers who are casting for real fashion shows.  While some got a taste of being a successful working model, those who failed to impress experienced the brutal side of the modelling industry.

Challenge: Toronto Fashion Week

The Top Model contestants fly to Canada for Toronto Fashion Week to see how bookable they are outside of the Top Model bubble.  They must impress eight designers (one of them being Jay Manuel) over three casting sessions.

The Good: I can't say I'm surprised that Sophie came out on top, successfully booking four shows.  What's even more impressive is she survived the high standards of Pink Tartan.  I wasn't expecting Eboni to do just as well, I have to say.  Clearly she's more of a runway model than a print model.

The Bad: Ashley, Catherine and Seymone failed to book any shows.  Poor Ashley just could not nail her walk.  I don't know which is worse though; not getting booked at all or getting booked, and then getting fired!  Sophie, Laura and Kyle were going to be walking for Pink Tartan before Laura and Kyle were told to leave mere hours before as their inexperience may wreck the show.  OUCH.

The Ugly: Seymone's bad attitude.  Has anyone noticed that her mood is dependent on how she does each week?  If she wins a challenge or gets great feedback from the judges, she's all happy and smiley.  If she receives the opposite, she starts sulking and throwing temper tantrums.  I agree with Annaliese; she's such a child!  I don't think she has the maturity to make it in the industry.

Photo Shoot: Let's Get Sweet & Sticky

The concept for this week's photo shoot is one sticky mess but in a high fashion way!  When you think of Canada, that signature red leaf and maple syrup usually comes to mind but I'll bet the Top Model contestants weren't expecting to sample both in the way that they did!

The Good: Lots of good shots this week!  Catherine took the ultimate beauty shot, absolutely nailing Tyra's signature "smize".  Even though her expression was slightly vacant, I did like Annaliese's animalistic pose.  Kyle's photo with her piercing eyes was another good one; almost perfect if it weren't for her weirdly positioned "dead" arm.  I liked that AzMarie was the only one who wasn't looking at the camera and instead used her body language to tell the story.

The Bad: Alisha's photo was incredibly disappointing.  It was way too safe, not creative at all and she didn't really have any expression on her face.  She really needs to step up her game!

The Ugly: Nothing to moan about!  I can't really say anybody had a really awful photo this week.

Judging: It's All About Getting Booked

The two teams are at equal numbers again but Team US are back to dominating the competition.  Only Sophie gets called early leaving the remaining four Brits at the bottom of the pack.

It's no surprise that Catherine and Ashley are in the bottom two based on their poor performance at casting.  Seymone would have no doubt been at the bottom as well if it weren't for her managing a great photo this week.  What do you think of Tyra's parting career advice to Ashley?
