Top Model British Invasion: Episode 4 - Jay Alexander

ANTM - ep 4 - season 18

by Faith-Ashleigh Wong

Following Louise's shock exit, Team UK are naturally in a bit of a state.  Eboni, on the other hand, is too busy thinking of herself, specifically the judges' critique that she looked like a prostitute in her photo.  This week we see the Brits pull together having lost one of their own while the US girls seem to be falling apart.

Challenge: From Super Powers to Super Sales

Martin Lindstrom, renowned brand specialist who we first met last cycle is back to impart more tough love on the Top Model contenders.  The girls' gift of the gab (or lack thereof) are put to the test when they are tasked to star in their own TV commercial where they need to sell ordinary everyday products.

The thing that would have put me in a bit of a panic was not being given any time to prepare what to say and the sales pitch being recorded in just one continuous take; fumbles, stutters and all!  As if that wasn't already enough pressure, their commercial will then be played to a focus group who will give feedback on what their first impressions were.

The Good: It's no surprise that the UK girls were far more eloquent than the US girls.  Sophie was adorable and relatable and her sales pitch was more like a casual conversation between friends.  Annaliese really embodied her Excite-To-Buy intoxibella power and her experience as a TV presenter really worked in her favour; she sold that universal remote control like it was a pair of Jimmy Choo's!

The Bad: Overall Team US' sale pitches were just boring and lacked personality.  Kyle was quite literally like a deer in headlights; she was stuttering and saying things wrong – like crispy fresh breath?!  Candace also tripped over her words and was too forceful in selling her product.  It was Eboni though who least impressed as she was too full of herself and talked down to the consumers.

The Ugly: How harsh was that focus group?!  It's never nice hearing negative things about you but that was pretty painful.  I thought it was hilarious that one of them thought Alisha had an African accent!  Ignorant much?  Sour grapes were definitely present amongst the girls when looks prevailed with Kyle being a favourite even though she messed up her words.  Under attack from all angles, Kyle storms off with the intention to quit.  Could another premature exit be imminent?

Photo Shoot: British Philip Treacy Hats meet American Vintage Cars

Hats are my thing so I really enjoyed this photo shoot!  Those hats were stunning.  And let's face it, it's always a treat seeing more of the dashing Nigel Barker and even better, in his element!

The Good: There were many good photos this week, in my opinion!  True to her intoxibella power, Laura "zagged" when others "zigged" by being the only one who posed on the ground; I loved the twists and turns of her body in her pose – definitely modelling from H2T!  Kyle managed to pull herself together after almost quitting and boy did she pull off a stunner!  Loved the intensity in her eyes and how she was perched on the car so gracefully but yet had a fierce "don't mess with me" air about her.  AzMarie's bold but beautiful shot really did look like she was animated; I was reminded of Avatar!  I also really loved Ashley's photo – she sold the dress well and her eyes just drew you in.

The Bad: Once again, Candace did not provide any variety in her posing.  Her "best" shot looked rather awkward with her stiff pose and weirdly cocked neck – not a flattering look for her or the dress!  Seymone frustrated Nigel at the shoot, having no direction or thought process with what she was doing and it definitely showed in her picture.  Her photo was boring and it was just her looking pretty.  I definitely agree that she looked like the mayor's wife on a parade float – harsh but so true.

The Ugly: While Sophie and Annaliese looked gorgeous, their photos were made ugly by their awful poses!  They both struggled with angles.  I agree with Kelly, Sophie's pose made her look pregnant which was not only unflattering but also just did not make sense with the concept of the shoot.  Annaliese was not modelling from H2T as she looked fierce in her face but neck down it just looked very odd and disproportionate.  I just didn't get the arms on the waist and legs wide apart pose.

Judging: Mediocre versus Mediocre

I was not surprised at who landed in the bottom two.  They both were not embracing their intoxibella power and they both were falling behind the pack with their mediocre and inconsistent photos.  The right girl got sent home but I reckon the one that scraped through is on her last chance card.  For her sake, let's hope she pulls a rabbit out of the hat next week!
