Kim Crawford has never been conventional. It’s the unique spirit of daring to be different that helped a determined Kim Crawford create a world beating wine. Now, that same spirit encourages the Whitecliffe students to step outside their comfort zone.
In all started in 1996, when Kim Crawford and his wife Erica fell in love with the idea of starting a winery. The only problem was they had virtually no money. Undaunted by this obstacle, the company was founded and run from a spare room out of Kim and Erica’s Auckland home. Their first vintage produced 4,000 cases including: Sauvignon Blanc, Unoaked Chardonnay, Semillon not to mention an oak aged chardonnay.
Once the first vintage was released, Kim Crawford’s powerful and aromatic wines gained a fanatical following. After only two years, the brand began exporting to the United States and shortly after the Crawford’s began looking in the Marlborough region to buy a winery of their own.
In 2003, Kim Crawford Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc made the Wine Spectator’s Top 100 List for the first of many times. By 2008 our Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc had been awarded 91 points for seven years straight. Today, Kim Crawford Wines is the number one luxury New Zealand wine in the U.S.
The brand may have grown but the approach hasn’t changed. Kim Crawford doesn’t compromise on quality and embraces unconventional, creative ways to express itself.
