Ever wondered what actually is that colourful liquid you see floating in a lava lamp?

This week’s episode gives us a lesson in religion specifically that of Pierce’s reformed neo-Buddhist church (even though everyone else around him is convinced he has unwittingly joined a cult – and I tend to agree).

While everyone is clearly shaken up at the news of his mother’s death, Pierce appears completely unfazed. With the aid of a very comical looking graphic flowchart, he explains very matter-of-factly that his mother’s body is going to be vaporized and stored in an “energon pod” (a.k.a the lava lamp) and once technology has caught up, her body’s vapours will be reinstated to its solid state.

The expression on everyone’s faces as they listen to this twisted version of reincarnation is absolutely priceless. It’s an obvious reference to Scientology and somehow I can just picture a very similar conversation happening in the near future between say, Tom Cruise and his daughter. But I digress...

My favourite scene in this episode is what happens right after the opening credits. The group run up to Jeff and surround him looking like lost children to which Jeff responds almost resignedly “Look, if you guys just let me get to the can opener I can feed you.”

That line is not only witty funny but absolutely hits the nail on the head in terms of describing this ensemble’s group dynamic. Jeff really is like the shepherd of the group. The banter that goes on after as everyone’s opinions of religion come to the fore also run in the same perfectly timed witty vein which I feel works very well within the format of the show and is probably what makes it such an enjoyable watch.

In this episode we also see the suspected-to-have-a-drinking-problem British professor Dr Ian Duncan play Anthropology lecturer for the week. He and his now-rival Chang have a little cat-and-mouse-esque exchange involving a measuring tape and force fields which is a barrel of laughs.

Meanwhile Annie and Britta have a little rivalry of their own while Shirley stands on the outside looking in. It’s an interesting look at how to use your womanly charms (or not) to coerce men into giving you money. Apparently talking about pelicans being “feathery” and “pelican-y” will do the trick. That and wearing a back brace when you were younger.

The episode wraps up in a very “full circle” kind of way and I liked the little Abed moment that was slipped in. Hopefully Abed will be up to more in the next episode, looks like we’ll have to tune in to find out!
