Love is in the air on the set of The Glee Project. Well that's what you're supposed to believe, anyway! The final six couple up for Romanticality week and suffice it to say things get a little steamy.
Shanna feels both pride and pressure when she realizes she is the only one that has yet to meet and perform for Ryan Murphy. (She spoke too soon...) Meanwhile with only two guys left in the competition, it looks like it's going to be a battle for the role of alpha male.
More Than Words by Extreme needs no introduction, I don't think. Personally it's one of my all-time favourite love songs. We find out that it is a favourite of Robert Urlich too since he lost a little something to the song...there's something I don't think he planned on sharing with the world!
It was extremely cool that the contenders got to perform it with the actual lead guitarist from the band accompanying them. The melody is great, the lyrics are lovely and so meaningful but for me, the best thing about the song has always been the guitar – especially that intro!
Like guest mentor Darren Criss, I too really enjoyed the way they performed the number as three different couples with three different energies and stories. Was it just me or was it a tad awkward and uncomfortable to watch though? Considering none of them have a crush on their partner, I thought they did really well. They are better actors than last season's bunch, in my opinion.
I thought Darren gave very good critique; I observed the same things too. It's not at all unexpected that Aylin and Lily's performance veered on the melodramatic and that Michael and Shanna were a little stiff – this is not new feedback. Blake and Ali were adorable as a couple. As Darren said, they were very relaxed and playful and Blake in particular gave a very earnest performance.
How cute was Darren?! Having been the very first mentor in the first season, I was beginning to wonder when his turn was and if he was going to make an appearance at all... I loved his little "you all are awesome" whisper as he left!
This week's vocal session with Nikki was focused on duets and harmonies, two things that had not yet been tackled but is an integral part of being on Glee. Tables turn as the ones that usually have issues in the vocal booth nail their parts while others that have breezed through in the past, struggle.
In the battle for the alpha male position, to everyone's surprise, this week Michael triumphed over Blake, who up until now could do no wrong. Michael nailed his vocal and during the video shoot he was well-matched with Lily; their two different performance energies complemented each other perfectly. This week Nikki uncovered Blake's Achilles heel – those harmonies were rough.
What a shocking bottom three! I was surprised that despite getting the same note each week Michael got yet another reprieve but I do think it was his unexpectedly smooth session in the vocal booth that saved him.
Ryan brought up good points and observations about each of them. Despite Aylin forgetting the lyrics and the concern that Blake has been coasting on his charm, sadly Shanna's first meeting with Ryan ended up being her last. Harsh, but this far in the game, one bad week could send you home.
