When I think theatricality and Glee all I can think of is the Gaga episode and Kurt in those crazy platforms! Oh and that hilarious stuffed animal dress Rachel wore! Sorry, having Glee flashbacks...
For Theatricality week on this season's The Glee Project, Gaga and that infamous meat dress makes an appearance. So does Elvis, Madonna, Bowie and even Britney!
The remaining contenders are given a different musical icon to embody in this week's group number, The Pussycat Dolls' When I Grow Up. But first let us watch Aylin be all gloomy and grumpy because she's missing Charlie. I know it's awful to say but I'm so relieved the lovebirds are no more. What's far more exciting is the blossoming bromance between Michael and Blake, don't you think?
Grant Gustin is this week's guest mentor and wasn't he such a sweetheart?! Utterly despise Sebastian Smythe but LOVE Grant, especially after this episode! I thought he summed up theatricality perfectly: "living in heightened emotion".
I Hope I Get It was an interesting choice for the homework assignment. I liked the way they kind of acted it in places and injected some elements of humour and personality though; helped make the performance more theatrical than musical. Ali and Lily both stood out for me but that's no surprise considering their theatre backgrounds; they were clearly in their element.
At the vocal booth, Nikki hit a raw nerve when she asked Abraham if he considered himself androgynous. I can understand why he got upset but as Nikki later points out, many of the musical greats are/were androgynous so it's not a bad thing. I say embrace the androgyny, Abraham!
The choreography session was intense! As Zach said, this week's dance routine was more a memory game of remembering which pose to strike. I think the contenders are definitely getting better each week at keeping up with the dance moves. They did exceptionally well this week, I thought.
How fabulous did everyone look at the shoot?! Absolutely fantastic costumes; if that didn't help them portray their assigned superstars then nothing would. Abraham was the perfect Bowie and of course how could Aylin as Madonna not don the legendary cone bra? I loved that she used them as can openers! Biggest kudos has to go to Shanna for surviving that disgusting and smelly meat dress!
What was expected of them this week was simple: be "big, bold and theatrical". And what they needed to do in the music video was lose themselves in their characters. Abraham, Lily and Nellie failed to do this on different levels.
Abraham nailed it on the head when he acknowledged that he let fear paralyze him. I liked that Ryan Murphy described him as a shapeshifter – so true. And how awesome was he at rapping?!
I am so sick of Lily's argumentative attitude! She's always giving excuses and blaming everyone else but herself. It's disrespectful and in my opinion, it makes her almost impossible to mentor.
I've realized what Nellie's problem is. She can't act; she can only play herself. Every one of her last chance performances has been just amazing. Her vocal range is just ridiculous! But as we all know being on Glee is more than just being a great singer and sadly she needed more "performer" in her.
