The Glee Project - Fearlessness

by Faith-Ashleigh Wong

Fresh off an unpredictable week where nothing went as planned or expected, the remaining nine barely have time to catch their breath before they are thrown out of their comfort zone again. Last week they faced the fear of the unknown, this week they face fear itself.

But first, a spot of puppy love. Who here is finding the whole Charlie/Aylin romance just slightly nauseating at this point? I know I'm over it. I'm actually quite surprised the mentors have been as patient and tolerant as they have been.

I thought the homework assignment was an absolute riot! Abraham's suggestion to start the song – Now That We Found Love by Heavy D – with a little "butt choreography" was just hilarious. I suppose if they were going to sound ridiculous they might as well look it too! Considering rap wasn't anyone's forte though, I thought they did remarkably well.

How awesome was Jane Lynch? It's hard to believe someone so warm and friendly could play the acid-tongued and mean-spirited Sue Sylvester. Mark of a great actor!

This week's group number was another mash up – Hit Me With Your Best Shot and One Way Or Another. In keeping with the fearlessness theme, everyone had to don swimsuits and brave the one thing that the New Directions dread: getting slushied.

I thought it was so funny how everyone got really excited at the prospect of being slushied. In the context of Glee, getting the "slushie facial" is avoided at all costs. But in the context of being a Gleek, being slushied is like an initiation into the Hall of Glee, a rite of passage!

It's no surprise that Nellie and Michael struggled with this week's theme; they are definitely the two most introverted out of the bunch. I felt really bad for Nellie, in particular. Each week she keeps being given a character that is sexy and confident, the exact opposite of who she is. I do believe it is somewhat intentional; I think the mentors want to push her because they know she has it in her.

I was so impressed by Ali this week and how she challenged herself and was determined to do something her body actually physically couldn't handle. For me, she totally nailed fearlessness.

Even though Michael still struggled to get out of his head, he got given a reprieve this week. Nellie wasn't so lucky, unfortunately. While she did deliver in the end, the time it took to get there just would not have been acceptable on a real set. Also singing for Ryan were, unsurprisingly, the two lovebirds.

As much as I find Aylin annoying, I've got to hand it to her – she nailed her last chance performance. Her rendition of Take A Bow was heartfelt and full of attitude and I loved the way she built the song up to its climax. Nellie could have definitely given her a run for her money though! I loved the honesty in the way she delivered the song and I was really impressed by her vocal range. Beyoncé songs are notoriously difficult but she sang it beautifully and effortlessly.

Ryan and the mentors seemed mildly impressed by Charlie's creative spin to a Tom Jones' classic but in the end four times in a row being in the bottom three, finally caught up on him. Definitely the right choice especially when he looked more upset that he was leaving Aylin than the competition.
