Amber Riley (as Mercedes Jones)

Mercedes Jones Biography

Mercedes gets a few opportunities to shine early on in the new school year. First she duets with Santana on Ike & Tina Turner's "River Deep, Mountain High" and then she takes on the role of Frank-N-Furter in Will's ultimately aborted production of Rocky Horror.

When Kurt strikes up a friendship with Blaine from the Dalton Academy Warblers, Mercedes gets jealous. Kurt tries to make her feel better by arranging a blind date that goes badly. After that, Mercedes channels all of her energy into fighting a Tater Tot ban in the McKinley High cafeteria, but she ultimately realizes that she uses her friendship with Kurt and food obsessions to fill the void she feels over not having a boyfriend.

Rachel and Mercedes' musical rivalry drives them to go head-to-head in a "diva-off." And as the glee club prepares for their "Night of Neglect" fundraiser, Lauren Zizes offers to be Mercedes' manager so that she gets the respect that she deserves. Mercedes concedes the final spot as long as her feet are never allowed to touch the ground during the benefit. Then Mercedes steals the spotlight at the show performing Aretha Franklin's Ain't No Way.

Dateless Mercedes is disappointed that she won't get to live out a Cinderella fantasy on prom night. But when Rachel suggests that they both go on a just-friends, three-way date with Sam, Mercedes agrees. What no one realizes is that Mercedes and Sam make a connection, and they secretly starting dating.
